Designing a module has just become a whole lot easier and quicker, thanks to the latest revamp of the Layout page to build a module. The new WYSIWYG Module Editor (What You See Is What You Get Module Editor) makes it hassle-free to create or edit a module. Gone are the days when you had to switch between different tabs such as Fields, Layout and Fields & Links Permission in order to edit a module. You can now do all of this and more from one place!
This transition guide aims to help you adapt to the new Layout design and get a quick understanding of the major changes that have been made.
To try the new easy-to-use Layout to design your module, click Setup > Customization > Layout and click the "Try Now" link on the Discover a quicker way to design your module banner.
This will lead you to the new user interface of the Layout page to design your module. Click Create New Module to see the revamped version of the module Layout.
Using the new Layout, you can create new fields, add sections, set module and field permissions, all from one place.
You can switch back to the older version by clicking the "Switch to Old Version" link. However, note that the older version of Layout will be available only for a few more months. We will keep you posted of the updates regarding the same.
The Fields List View has been revamped. The Fields List View will no longer have any items listed under the Actions column. That is, the Edit/Repace/Delete links have been removed. This change has been done so that it becomes easier for you now to perfrom all actions with respect to a module from a single place. Whether you want to add or edit a field, remove a section, delete fields, you can do so from the Layout page. You do not have to switch to the Fields tab to perform these actions.
Now the Fields List View simply lists all the details of the fields in a module. It is rather a source of information about Fields than a place to make any changes.
To edit a field now, simply go to the required module's Layout page, click the Settings icon on the required field and select Field Properties. In the popup that appears, you can make the changes you require.
The Modules List View has also undgergone a revamp. In the older UI, the Modules List View had very few quick-edit options. In the new UI, the Modules List View offers much more quick edit options. Also from the list view you can now understand at a glance, all the profiles that each module has been shared with, who modified it last.
Custom Modules are now called User Created Modules and are represented by an asterisk (*) adjacent to the module's name.
As the Action items have been removed from the Fields List View, there is no longer an Edit/Replace/Delete link for a picklist field in the Fields List View page.
You can now edit a picklist field from the new Layout page of the required module.
To add new values in the picklist field, click the required module, and in the module's Layout page, click the Settings icon on the picklist field and select "Field Properties". In the Pick List Properties popup, you can add new values. These new values will appear in the module form for new records and will not affect the existing records.
Note:
As the name suggests, the "Do Not Allow Duplicates" option is used when you want to avoid the creation of duplicate records in a module. This option is currently available only for the Leads and Contacts modules.
In the older UI, this option is located in the Layout page for the Leads/Contacts modules. We found that it would be easier if we made this option available near the Email field itself.
Therefor in the new UI, "Do Not Allow Duplicates" is now present as one of the options under Field Settings in the Email field of the Leads and Contacts modules. Select the Do not allow duplicates checkbox at the time of creating or editing the module itself.
This way you don't have to switch between Fields and Layout every time you want to use this option.
In the older UI, you had to switch between different tabs to set permissions for a module or a particular field. It is quite an effort to create a field under the Fields tab and assign the permissions for it under the Users & Permissions tab (Fields & Links Permissions). In order to save you the trouble, field permissions can now be set for a field just as you create it.
In the new UI, you can achieve this by selecting Set Permission under the required field's Settings menu.
You can also now set Module Level permission by selecting the profiles that should have access to the module.
Once you have created/edited a module and set relevant permissions, you can preview the module as a particular User Profile - example, Administrator, Standard. This way you can quicky check how the module will appear to users under each profile and make the changes required before saving the layout.
Do check out the new UI to design a module right away. We are positive that you will love it!
